I

.n this spring of 1990, our senior class graduates, and in doing so joins the rest of
the world in taking a step forward into a new decade. This decade will bring with it
incredible changes; just as each successive decade until now has produced more and
greater advancements.

Time is only a matter of perspective. So much has happened and changed within our
high school years, within the past decade alone, much less within our lives or in this
century. Ask someone born at the beginning of this century how much life has changed
for the world . . .

Many of these changes have been for the good. Everything is much easier,' faster,
better. We have efficient systems of transportation and communication, innumerable
medicines, and mere survival is no longer an issue for the overwhelming majority of the
human race. We have cordless phones, faster cars, microwaves, VCRs, compact disc
players, widescreen TVs, Ralph Lauren clothes, plastic money, condominiums. Money
seems to be there for the making, and, for many, it is not a matter of "having" but of
"having how much?": whether it involves a little stock for the family or floating junk
bonds worth billions of dollars.

A SENSE OF STYLE

I

.n addition, we have other political advancements: countries wherein the
people rule themselves, where "freedom" abounds, and it is basically possible to
live our lives in whatever way we see fit, as long as we do not infringe upon the
freedoms of others. In our country, we are guaranteed "certain unalienable
rights", and government and religion have been able to form various moral and
ethical standards which are commonly accepted. These are indeed vast im-
provements upon even relatively recent times for mankind.

Of course, there is another side to the booming prosperity of mankind,
another story to complement the incredible scientific and political and social
success story of the human race. We also now have bigger missiles (enough
military power to destroy this planet hundreds of times over), more people,
crippling drug problems, homeless in the cities of some of the greatest countries
in the world, and more, "new", deadlier diseases than those we have found
cures for, corrupt religious organizations. Worst of all, we are, through pol-
lution, overpopulation, and lack of consideration, slowly but irrevocably de-
stroying the planet which has given us life for over a million years. So where do
we stand, individuals in a world of billions?

THE FUTURE IS OPEN

WIDE OPEN

o

ur class will enter the 1990's having just graduated from Randolph High School, leaving
behind us twelve long years of schooling. We've learned how to read and write, to understand the
fundamentals of the sciences, to speak in new languages. Each of us has developed our own likes
and dislikes, discovered our own personality and sense of style, and largely determined the person
we will be for the rest of our lives. Our graduation in 1990 gives us a unique perspective; we are
both entering an entire new time and life and ending a century of unparalleled advancements in
every field of human endeavor.

Now, we are almost ready to leave this structured world and enter what is known euphemis-
tically as "The Real World". This isn't to say we've been living in an imaginary or fairy-tale land
until this moment, but our lives will soon be radically changed. Whether we have chosen to start
working full-time, to travel, to start a family, or to advance our learning at a college or university,
we have chosen, and our choice determines which particular road we each will travel.

However, too often we assume that each particular road is narrow, defined, limited. These
roads are only what we make of them, and it is up to us to decide what we want and to go after our
own goals and dreams. The best course to follow has always proven to be Action: to act is the
quickest way to see results. An age-old proverb says "Actions speak louder than words", and, in
1988, Nike captured this spirit by saying "JUST DO IT". Now is the time to go after our dreams
and to shape the rest of our lives.

OF OUR LIVES

Iverything that we decide to undertake will have a result, and these consequences must be considered
carefully. Recent history has shown that advancement is almost always counterparted by some sort of obstacle
or problem, and the human race as a whole has too often ignored our "dark side", which has left us in our
current uneasy situation. We must act in a way that involves taking responsibility for our actions and the
actions of those who have gone before us. We must decide now the sorts of persons we wish to be and act
accordingly.

As we, the R.H.S. Class of 1990, take the first steps onto these roads, and as the world around us enters the
last decade of this century, remember that 1990 promises a new beginning, a dawn to a new decade and to a
new time in our lives. How our lives continue depends on our decisions and actions now. High school is in the
past, a source of many fond memories. The future is open, wide open, full of possibility and opportunity.
